Transgender women often have wider chests, larger pectoral muscles, smaller nipples, and a shorter distance between their nipples and inframammary fold. The objective of MTF top surgery is to produce an aesthetically pleasing, more feminine-looking chest, taking these factors into account.
MTF top surgery is an outpatient procedure requiring general anesthesia. Dr. Yaghoubian will make an incision in the armpit, around the areola, or in the inframammary fold. Incision location depends on the surgical method and patient preference. The surgeon inserts either silicone or saline implants into the chest through the incisions.
If needed, Dr. Yaghoubian may contour the chest and shape the nipple-areolar complex to have a more feminine appearance. She closes the incisions and applies bandages, including a compression bra.
For transgender women who have not been on hormone therapy, their skin may require stretching before MTF top surgery. In these cases, our surgeon will insert tissue expanders into the chest and injects saline into them every few weeks until there is enough space for an implant.
After the procedure, patients should have a ride home and might need someone who can care for them immediately following their surgery. Pain is generally minimal and easily controlled with pain medication. Bruising and swelling are normal and subside over a few weeks. A compression bra or comparable sports bra should be worn for three weeks to decrease swelling and support healing.
Most patients can return to non-strenuous jobs within two weeks after MTF top surgery. As swelling and bruising heal, results will become apparent over the first few weeks. Final results may take up to a year.
