Recovery Process for Gynecomastia: What to Expect After Surgery

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia surgery is a common procedure that helps to reduce the size of male breasts. This surgery can be life-changing for men who feel self-conscious about their appearance. Recovery is an important part of the process, and it’s important to understand what to expect during this time. In this blog post, we will discuss the healing process after gynecomastia surgery. We will also provide tips for a smooth and successful recovery!

What to Expect After Gynecomastia

After gynecomastia surgery, it is normal to feel some pain and discomfort. This is usually controlled with pain medication, either prescribed by your surgeon, or over the counter. Some patients are injected with a long-acting local anesthetic that can last up to 5 days. You will also have swelling and bruising around the incision sites. These side effects should start to improve within a week or two. It is important to wear a compression garment as directed by your surgeon to help reduce swelling. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect.

When Do Things Return to Normal?

Most men return to work and their normal activities within a week or two. However, you should avoid strenuous activity for at least four-six weeks after surgery. This includes lifting weights, running, and other high-impact activities. You will need to take it easy for a few weeks as your body heals from surgery.

The results of your surgery will be visible immediately. However, it can take several weeks for the swelling to completely resolve. You will continue to see improvements in the months following your surgery as your body heals and adjusts to its new shape.

For most patients undergoing gynecomastia surgery, the 6-week mark signals the end of the recovery process. At this point, patients can usually resume all forms of exercise, including strenuous chest movements. They can also sleep in any position without experiencing discomfort. In some cases, there may still be a small amount of swelling in the pecs; however, this is typically resolved within a few weeks. Once all residual swelling has dissipated, patients will enjoy a sculpted chest that is free from excess tissue.
